IRS FILING EXTENSIONS

Millions of taxpayers in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared disaster-areas are eligible for possible tax filing extensions to avoid tax filing penalties. The current list of eligible localities and those taxpayers potentially affected by recent storms should visit the current disaster relief page on IRS.gov. 

  • Most of California, and parts of Alabama and Georgia have until Monday, October 16, 2023, to file various individual and business tax returns as well as make tax payments. 
  • Taxpayers affected by flooding in Illinois and Alaska have until October 31, 2023, to file.
  • Those affected by flooding in Vermont have until November 15, 2023, to file.
  • Taxpayers affected by recent natural disasters including those impacted by the recent Maui, Hawaii fires and Hurricane Idalia in parts of Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia have until February 24, 2024, to file various individual and business tax returns. 
  • Individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Lee in Maine and Massachusetts have until February 15, 2024, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. 
  • Following the disaster declaration issued by FEMA, individuals and households affected by the seawater intrusion that reside or have a business in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard parishes also have until February 15, 2024, to file various tax returns and make tax payments. 
  • Members of the military and others serving in combat zones typically have 180 days after receiving leave to file returns and pay any taxes due.
  • Eligible farmers and ranchers forced to sell livestock due to drought may have an extended period in which to replace their livestock and defer tax on any gains from the forced sales. Notice 2023-67 lists the applicable areas that are designated as eligible for federal assistance: 49 states, the District of Columbia, two U.S. territories, and two independent nations in a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
